₹50 crore wheat seed subsidy for Punjab farmers ahead of Rabi season says BJP chief Dhillon

Punjab wheat seed subsidy

Chandigarh : Punjab farmers will get ₹50 crore in subsidy support for certified wheat seeds ahead of the Rabi 2026-27 sowing season, with the Centre approving the proposal under the Seed Component of the National Food Security and Nutrition Mission (NFSNM).

Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon said Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan informed him of the decision in a personal letter, describing the move as timely support for farmers preparing for the wheat crop.

The subsidy is intended to help farmers procure certified wheat seed at subsidised rates before Rabi sowing begins, Dhillon said. “The timely decision will enable farmers to get high-quality wheat seeds at subsidised rates before the sowing of the Rabi season,” Dhillon said.

The BJP state president said the decision reflected the Narendra Modi government’s focus on farmer welfare in Punjab and on strengthening farm livelihoods.

Dhillon said the assistance would be provided through the NFSNM’s Seed Component, placing the ₹50 crore allocation within the Centre’s existing programme for improving seed access and agricultural productivity.

He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on behalf of Punjab’s farmers, saying the support would provide relief ahead of the new cropping season.

The announcement comes as Punjab farmers prepare for the Rabi cycle, with wheat remaining a key crop in the state’s agricultural economy. The subsidy on certified seed is aimed at reducing the upfront cost of seed procurement for eligible farmers.

Dhillon also said the Centre remained committed to providing assistance to Punjab’s farming community and supporting the wider development of the state’s agricultural sector.
