Punjab bus accident: 3 dead as LPU students’ bus falls off
Chandigarh. At least three people, including the bus conductor, were killed in a Punjab bus accident on Monday morning. A private bus carrying Lovely Professional University (LPU) students and tourists back from Manali fell off a bridge near Banga in Nawanshahr district. One student is missing.
The Nawanshahr bus accident took place near Majari village in Banga. Early reports say the driver fell asleep at the wheel. He lost control and the bus plunged off the bridge.
The crash tore the bus apart. Pictures from the accident site show the white bus lying on its side, its front ripped open and the windscreen gone. Broken glass and parts of the bus lay scattered on the road. Police teams and a recovery van were at the spot.
Police and the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district administration have not yet confirmed the final death toll or the number of injured. None of the dead or injured has been identified so far.
The LPU students were among passengers returning to Punjab after a trip to Manali in Himachal Pradesh. The Phagwara-based private university says it has more than 40,000 students from across India and several other countries.
This is a developing story. More details are awaited.
