DAP, urea being black-marketed in Punjab, alleges BJP Kisan Morcha; 80% mandal teams formed

Chandigarh. The BJP’s farm wing on Monday accused the Punjab government of failing farmers and letting DAP and urea fertilisers reach the black market. Its Punjab unit also said 80% of its mandal teams across the state have been formed.

The charge came from BJP Kisan Morcha national president and Rajya Sabha MP Bansi Lal Gurjar at the first state executive meeting of the morcha’s Punjab unit in Chandigarh. The meeting was chaired by state president Lakhwinder Singh Momi.

Gurjar hit out at the state government over its handling of farmers’ issues and the alleged black-marketing of DAP and urea, the two fertilisers farmers depend on most. The charge comes in the middle of the rabi sowing season, when demand for DAP in Punjab’s wheat belt is at its highest.

Gurjar thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the steps taken for farmers’ welfare. He held detailed talks with the state team on expanding the organisation, farm issues and future strategy.

Momi said the Kisan Morcha will build its organisation in every village of Punjab and speak up strongly for farmers’ rights. Solving farmers’ problems and making sure central schemes reach every eligible farmer is the morcha’s top priority, he said.

Momi said 80% of the morcha’s mandal teams in Punjab have been formed, and the rest will be finalised soon.

The state executive also unanimously passed three resolutions on its commitment to a drug-free Punjab.

Present at the meeting were Kisan Morcha national vice-president Mukesh Maan, national general secretary Dr Shambhu Kumar, Punjab BJP general secretary (organisation) Manthri Srinivasulu, and state general secretaries Major Singh Tibbi, Manpreet Singh Talwandi and Sikander Singh. The full state leadership, executive members, district presidents and other office-bearers also attended.

The BJP has struggled to win support in rural Punjab since the 2020-21 farm laws agitation. Its farm wing now wants a team in every village before the 2027 Assembly elections.
