Two held with 5kg heroin near Amritsar’s Mudhal bypass, police bust supply ring

Amritsar. Two men from Amritsar’s Mustafabad were arrested near the Mudhal bypass on Sunday as they were allegedly on their way to hand over a large heroin consignment to a buyer on the Amritsar-Batala road. Police recovered 5kg of heroin from them.

The accused, Mahinder Singh and Kulwant Singh, were caught by the Counter Intelligence (CI) wing of Punjab Police in Amritsar, Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said in Chandigarh.

Middlemen in the chain

Early questioning shows the two worked as middlemen, the DGP said. They allegedly bought heroin from associates who are yet to be identified and passed it on to other buyers across Punjab.

Police are now trying to trace who supplied the drug to them and who was waiting to receive it. The aim is to find everyone involved and break up the larger network, the DGP said.

How the trap was laid

CI Amritsar got a specific tip-off that the two men were dealing in heroin with unknown partners. The input said they had recently picked up a big consignment and were driving towards the Amritsar-Batala road to deliver it.

Police teams moved fast and set up a raid. They stopped both men near the Mudhal bypass. A search turned up 5kg of heroin.

A case, FIR No. 71 dated November 1, 2026, has been registered under Sections 21 and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at the State Special Operations Cell (SSOC) police station in Amritsar.
